Institute in Critical Quantitative, Computational, & Mixed Methodologies

ICQCM SCHOLAR PROGRAM

2020-2021

NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION SCHOLARS COHORT

In order to meet the nation’s need for a larger Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) workforce, we seek to broaden the participation of underrepresented groups in data science and other STEM fields.

Bringing the capacities of Black, Indigenous, and Latina/o/x scholars to bear on the production of methodologically rigorous and innovative grant proposals will diversify and strengthen the nation’s scientific research funding apparatus.

Equipping researchers and the broader public with a critical awareness of how methodologies structure inequality and opportunity–and have also advanced processes of racialization, white supremacy, and erasure–is essential in understanding the social implications of data science within an increasingly diverse world.

EARTHDATA NASA UNBOUND (Earth Science Data Systems) ESDSPROGRAM

2022

Understanding Needs to Broaden Outside Use of NASA Data (UNBOUND)

NASA's Understanding Needs to Broaden Outside Use of NASA Data (UNBOUND) project employs a series of coordinated domain-specific workshops designed to match influential analysis and visualization practitioners in target communities with NASA data scientists and others knowledgeable in the field. This collaboration will help define barriers to using these data and implement high-impact activities that will put NASA data at the forefront of policy decisions and dramatically broaden the use of NASA Earth Science data in communities outside of the NASA research community.

Supplemental Instructor(SI) Faculty Certification & Institutional Accreditation

Supported by NSF funded grant LEAPS-F which focused on SI

2013

Co-authored and presnted a white paper on SI assessment in Math

Supplemental Instruction (SI) is a peer-led academic assistance program that helps students succeed in challenging courses. SI leaders are model students who have recently completed the same course they are leading, and they use their knowledge and experience to help students understand the material, develop study skills, and prepare for exams.

SI is accredited by the International Center for SI, and accredited programs meet rigorous standards for quality and effectiveness. SI leaders are trained on the core principles of the model, and they receive ongoing development and coaching from the International Center for SI.

SI has been shown to improve student grades, retention, and graduation rates. It is a valuable resource for students who want to succeed in their academic careers.

How can I begin to describe my time with Poveda... It was simply life-changing! I always imagined that Bali would be a breathtaking destination, but thanks to Poveda, I was able to not just experience the culture, but have once-in-a-lifetime memories. I got so much more than I ever anticipated from my holiday.
